We
use the group process as part of a range of services
directed towards meeting client needs.
The most enduring changes seem to come from
shifts at a deeper level rather than only by acquiring
specific skills and techniques for dealing with
a problematic situation. The goal of these three
groups is to help you shift to that deeper level
through weaving experiences and concepts together
to create those shifts, so that the accumulated
effects will lead to changes.
Fundamental to the practice
of group therapy is the principle that a small
group can act as a carrier of change and strongly
influence those who choose to be its members.~ Goldenberg & Goldenberg

We use the group process a part of a range

|
| What
does group work involve? All groups require
a commitment to attend a two-hour session each
week, for a period of 8 consecutive weeks. There
will be a need to practice various exercises during
the time between sessions
To give flexibility of choice, group sessions
are usually between 7.00pm and 9.00pm or between
10.00am and 12.00 noon. see Fees
& Schedules.
We meet together at our rooms in Fremantle see
Location. The setting
is informal. A coffee/tea break occurs midway
through the session
We work with small groups – ranging from
4 to 8 people.

What
are some benefits of working in groups?
- You can identify with the experience of others,
and feel less isolated
- You may get new insights or learn from listening
to and observing others
- Groups provide a safe place where you can
share without being judged
- Being part of a group can give you support
and increase your confidence
- Group work is less costly than individual
counselling
- Working with others who are also motivated
can be a rewarding experience
- Despite the ‘work’, a group can
be fun!

I
am not sure how I would be with a bunch of new people…..
Most group members have this concern
at the beginning.
Yet within a couple of sessions, this normally
disappears, as people get to know and appreciate
each other.
|
|
| Are
there any ‘rules’ that the group must
follow? Yes. We discuss this in the first
session, and the group collectively sets the ‘guidelines’
[with assistance from the group facilitator if
needed]
Examples of these guidelines include:
- Maintaining confidentiality; “What is
said or done in the group is not discussed with
others”
- Mutual respect for each other, while acknowledging
our right to hold different views
- Speaking and acting in a non-threatening
manner
- Allowing people to talk without interruption
[but not dominating the conversation]
